Neil Mantle MBE
Musical Director and Conductor
Neil Mantle began conducting at the age of fifteen when he formed his own chamber orchestra. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music and later at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama where he won the conducting prize. He was subsequently a prize winner in the Leeds Conducting Competition. He has conducted for both BBC Radio 3 and Radio Scotland with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and has appeared frequently with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He has also worked with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Scottish Opera Orchestra. In addition to his work with the Edinburgh Bach Choir a post he has held since 1993, he is founder conductor of Scottish Sinfonia which celebrates its fortieth anniversary 2010-2011. His previous appointments include conductor of Dundee Choral Union (1994-2007) and the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund Choir (2000-2007).
Neil Mantle has a large repertoire of some 350 scores conducted at public concerts. Although he is at home in a wide range of styles, he is especially regarded as an exponent of British music, most notably Elgar and Vaughan Williams. Neil is an examiner to the Associated Board and has made several international tours including Malaysia, Singapore and Ghana. He is an elected member of the Royal Society of Musicians, a recipient of an Honorary Degree from the Royal Academy of Music, and patron of the Elgar Society in Scotland.
